Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) began making photographs in France in the 1930s using a hand-held Leica camera. His spontaneous observations coupled with his early adoption of the 35 mm format ensured his place as the father of modern photo-journalism, championing an idiosyncratic mix of reporter and artist. In 1947 Cartier-Bresson helped form the Magnum Photo Agency with Robert Capa, George Rodger and David Seymour.
