Born: August 22nd in Chanteloup, Seine-et-Marne.
He attends the Lycee Condorcet without diploma.
  1927 - 1928
Studies painting with Andre Lhote.
  1932
Acquired a Leica camera.
  1935
Studied cinematography in New York City with Paul Strand.
  1936 - 1939
Works as a production assistant for Jean Renoir.
  1940
Captured by the Nazis while fighting in the French Army.
  1943
Escaped from prison.
  1944 - 1945
Portraits artists and writers, p.e. Matisse, Bonnard, Braque, Claudel. Joins a group of professional photographers in order to document the liberation of Paris. Finishes the documentary film about returning captives and deportees 'Le retour'.
  1947
Founds the agency 'Magnum Photos‘ with Robert Capa, David Seymour and Georges Roger.
  1969
Produces two documentary films for CBS News, U.S.A.
  1981
Awarded the 'Grand Prix National de la photographie' from the French Ministry of Culture.
  1986
Granted the 'Novecento Award' by Jorge Luis Borges in Palermo, Italy.
  1988
The Museum of Modern Art New York establishes the 'Henri Cartier-Bresson Prize“.

Opening of the 'Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson“ in Paris, France.
